IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

SAFETY INFORMATION

Please read and understand this entire manual before attempting to assemble, operate or install the product. This manual contains important information about the assembly, operation and maintenance of this patio heater. General safety information is presented in these first few pages and is also located throughout the manual. Keep this manual for future reference and to educate new users of this product. This manual should be read in conjunction with the labeling on the product. Safety precautions are essential when any mechanical or propane fueled equipment is involved. These precautions are necessary when using, storing, and servicing. Using this equipment with the respect and caution demanded will reduce the possibilities of personal injury or property damage.

DANGER

DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

DANGER

Failure to comply with the precautions and instructions provided with this heater can result in death, serious bodily injury and property loss or damage from hazards of fire, explosion, burn, asphyxiation, and/or carbon monoxide poisoning. Only persons who can understand and follow the instructions should use or service this heater.

EXPLOSION – FIRE HAZARD

• Keep solid combustibles, such as building materials, paper or cardboard, a safe distance away from the heater as recommended by the instructions.
• Provide adequate clearances around air openings into the combustion chamber.
• Never use the heater in spaces which do or may contain volatile or airborne combustibles, or products such as gasoline, solvents, paint thinner, dust particles or unknown chemicals.
• During operation, this product can be a source of ignition. Keep heater area clear and free from combustible materials, gasoline, paint thinner, cleaning solvents and other flammable vapors and liquids. Do not use heater in areas with high dust content. Minimum heater clearances from combustible materials: three (3) feet from the sides and three (3) feet from the top.
• Never store propane near high heat, open flames, direct sunlight, other ignition sources or where temperatures exceed 120 degrees F (49°C).
• Propane vapors are heavier than air and can accumulate in low places. If you smell gas, leave the area immediately.
• Never install or remove propane cylinder while heater is lighted, near flame, other ignition sources or while heater is hot to touch.
• This heater is red hot during use and can ignite flammables too close to the burner. Keep flammables at least three feet (1 m) from sides and three feet (1 m) from top. Keep gasoline and other flammable liquids and vapors well away from heater.
• Store the propane cylinder outdoors in a well ventilated space out of reach of children. Never store the propane cylinder in an enclosed area (house, garage, etc.). If heater is to be stored indoors, disconnect the propane cylinder for outdoor storage.

CARBON MONOXIDE HAZARD

• This heater is a combustion appliance. All combustion appliances produce carbon monoxide (CO) during the combustion process. This product is designed to produce extremely minute, non-hazardous amounts of CO if used and maintained in accordance with all warnings and instructions. Do not block air flow into or out of the heater.
• Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning produces flu-like symptoms, watery eyes, headaches, dizziness, fatigue and possibly death. You can’t see it and you can’t smell it. It’s an invisible killer. If these symptoms are present during operation of this product get fresh air immediately!
• For outdoor use only.
• Never use inside house, or other unventilated or enclosed areas.
• This heater consumes air (oxygen). Do not use in unventilated or enclosed areas to avoid endangering your life.

WARNING

We cannot foresee every use which may be made of our heaters. Check with your local fire safety authority if you have questions about heater use. Other standards govern the use of fuel gases and heat producing products for specific uses. Your local authorities can advise you about these. If no local codes exist, follow National Fuel Gas Code, ANS Z223.1. In Canada, installation must conform to local codes. If no local codes exist, follow the current National standards of CANADA CAN/CGA-B 149.2.

WARNING

Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids in the vicinity of this or any other appliance. An LP-cylinder not connected for use shall not be stored in the vicinity of this or any other appliance. Enclosed space can kill you. Never use this appliance in an enclosed space such as a camper, tent, car or home.

Improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service or maintenance can cause property damage, injury or death. Read the installation, operation and maintenance instructions thoroughly before installing or servicing this equipment.

WARNING BURN HAZARD

• Never leave heater unattended when hot or in use.
• Keep out of reach of children.

WARNING

Certain materials or items, when stored under the heater, will be subjected to radiant heat and could be seriously damaged.

CAUTION SERVICE SAFETY

• Keep all connections and fittings clean. Make sure propane cylinder valve outlet is clean.
• During set up, check all connections and fittings for leaks using soapy water. Never use a flame.
• Use as a heating appliance only. Never alter in any way or use with any device.

WARNING

• This product is fueled by propane gas. Propane gas is invisible, odorless, and flammable. An odorant is normally added to help detect leaks and can be described as a “rotten egg” smell. The odorant can fade over time so leaking gas is not always detectable by smell alone.
• Propane gas is heavier than air and leaking propane will sink to the lowest level possible. It can ignite by ignition sources including matches, lighters, sparks or open flames of any kind many feet away from the original leak. Use only propane gas set up for vapor withdrawal.
• Store or use propane gas in compliance with local ordinances and codes or with ANS/NFPA 58. Turn off propane when not in use.

WARNING

• Alert children and adults to the hazards of high surface temperatures. Stay away from these surfaces to avoid
• burning skin or igniting clothing.
• Carefully supervise young children when in the vicinity of the heater.
• Do not hang clothing or any other flammable materials from the heater, or place on or near the heater.
• Replace any guard or protective device removed for servicing the appliance prior to placing back in service.
• Installation and repair should be done by a qualified service person. The heater should be inspected before use and annually by a qualified service person. More frequent cleaning may be required as necessary. It is imperative that the control compartment, burners, and circulating air passageway of the appliance be kept clean.

IMPORTANT PROPANE CYLINDER INFORMATION

The propane gas and cylinder are sold separately. Every part of the heater shall be secure against displacement and shall be constructed to maintain a fixed relationship between essential parts under normal and reasonable conditions of handling and usage. Parts not permanently secured shall be designed so they cannot be incorrectly assembled and cannot be improperly located or misaligned in removing or replacing during cleaning or other servicing. Use a standard 20 lb. (9 kg) propane cylinder only (approximately 12.2 in. (31cm) in diameter and 17.9 in. (45.5cm high)). Use this heater only with a propane vapor withdrawal supply system. See chapter 5 of the standard for storage and handling of liquefied petroleum gas, ANS/NFPA 58. Your local library or fire department should have this book. Storage of an appliance indoors is permissible only if the cylinder is disconnected and removed from the appliance. A cylinder must be stored outdoors in a well-ventilated area out of the reach of children. A disconnected cylinder must have dust caps tightly installed and must not be stored in a building, garage or any other enclosed area. The maximum inlet gas supply pressure: 250 psi/1750 kPa. The minimum inlet gas supply pressure: 25psi/172kPa. Manifold pressure with regulator provided: 11 inch W.C/ 2.74 kPa. The minimum hourly of 17,000Btu/5.01kW is required input rating for an appliance for automatic operation at ratings less than full input rating. The pressure regulator and hose assembly supplied with the appliance must be used. The installation must conform with local codes, or in the absence of local codes, with national fuel gas code, ANS Z223.1/NFPA54, natural gas and propane Installation Code, CSA B149.1, or propane storage and handling code, B149.2. The propane cylinder must be constructed and marked in accordance with the specifications for LP gas cylinders of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) or the standard for cylinders, spheres and tubes for transportation of dangerous goods and commission, CAN/CSA-B339.

• The cylinder must have a listed overfilling prevention device.
• The cylinder must have a connection device compatible with the connection for the appliance.
• The cylinder used must include a collar to protect the cylinder valve.
• Never connect an unregulated propane cylinder to the heater.

Parts

Make sure that you have all the hardware necessary to assemble your new patio heater:

Note: You may receive more hardware than you need.

Tools needed

• You will need the following tools to assemble your new patio heater:
• Phillips screwdriver with a medium blade
• Wrench (6 × 8 mm)
• Leak detection solution

Assembling your patio heater

STEP 1: Attach the wheel kit

You need:

• Remove the two M8 × 16 mm bolts (AA) and the two M8 flange nuts (PP) from the base (K).
• From the inside of the base, insert the bolts through the base and into the wheel kit.
• Finger tighten the flange nuts onto the bolts.

STEP 2: Attach the ground fixers

You need:

• From the outside of the base, align the holes in a ground fixture (LL) with the holes in the base (K), then insert two M6×10 mm bolts (MM) through the holes in the fixtures and into the holes on the base.
• From the inside of the base, slide an Φ6 washer (GG) onto each bolt, then secure the fixture to the base with an M6nut(NN).

• Attach the other two ground fixtures.

STEP 3: Attach the support brackets

You need:

• Align a support bracket (l) with the support hole on the base, then insert an M8 x 16 mm bolt (AA) through the bracket and into the base.

• Loosely tighten the bolts.
• Attach the other two support brackets.

STEP 4: Attach the pole to the supports

You need

• Attach the lower pole (H) to the support brackets using six M6 × 30 mm bolts (DD) and six M6 flange nuts (BB). Fully tighten all of the bolts.

STEP 5: Install the cylinder housing

You need:

• Slide the cylinder housing (D) onto the pole assembly.

STEP 6: Attach reflector spacers and washers to the head assembly

You need:

• Attach three reflector spacers (EE) and three Ø8 washers (FF) to the top of the head assembly (C). Tighten the reflector spacers.

STEP 7: Attach the head assembly

You need:

• Remove the four M6 × 10 mm stainless steel bolts (CC) from the head assembly (C).

• Insert the head assembly hose into the upper pole (G), then secure the head assembly to the pole with the stainless steel bolts (CC).

Notes:

• The control knob on the head assembly should be above the decal on the pole.
• It is recommended that another person helps attach the head assembly.

STEP 8: Combine the poles

You need:

• Insert the upper pole (G) onto the lower pole (H). Make sure that the warning label is in the opposite direction of the wheels.

• Secure the poles with four 3/16″ screws (KK).

STEP 9: Assemble the reflector panels and plate

You need:

• Remove the protective cover on the three reflector panels (A) and the reflector plate (B).

• Slide the reflector panels (A) together.

Note: Each panels has a pre-installed bolt. To align the reflector sections correctly, you may need to loosen each panel bolt before assembling them, then tighten them after assembly..

• Insert one M6 x 10 mm screw (HH) through the screw hole on the bottom of the outer edge of each of the panels.
• Slide one Φ6 washer (GG) over the threaded end of the screw, then loosely screw a cap nut (II) over the screw.

• Place the reflector plate in the center of the assembled panels.

• Insert one M6 x 10 mm screw (HH) through the screw hole on the bottom of the inner edge of each of the panels.
• Slide one Φ6 washer (GG) over the threaded end of the screw, then screw a cap nut (II) over the screw.

• Tighten all the cap nuts.

STEP 10: Attach the reflector assembly to the head assembly

You need:

• Place three Ø8 washers (FF) over the threaded reflector spacers on the head assembly.
• Place the reflector assembly so that the holes on the assembly slide over the three reflector spacers (EE).

Note: It is recommended that another person helps attach the reflector assembly.

• Place three Ø8 washers (FF) over the threaded reflector spacers that extend through the reflector plate, then secure the reflector assembly to the head assembly with three wing nuts (JJ).

STEP 11: Install the propane cylinder

To make sure that the propane cylinder is installed correctly, see IMPORTANT PROPANE CYLINDER INFORMATION on page6.

WARNING:

• Do not store a spare LP-gas cylinder under or near this appliance.
• Never fill the cylinder beyond 80 percent full.
• Place the dust cap on the cylinder valve outlet whenever the cylinder is not in use. Only use the dust cap that is provided with the cylinder valve on the cylinder valve. Other types of caps or plugs may result in leakage of propane.

• Hold the regulator (F) in one hand and insert the nipple into the valve outlet. Make sure that the nipple is centered in the valve outlet. The coupling nut connects to the large outside threads on the valve outlet.

• Hand-tighten the coupling nut clockwise until it comes to a full stop. Firmly tighten by hand only.

• Slide the cylinder housing up, then insert the propane cylinder into your heater and secure it with the strap on the support bracket. Slide the cylinder housing back down.

To disconnect the cylinder

• Fully close the tank valve by turning it clockwise.
• Turn the coupling nut counterclockwise until the regulator assembly detaches.

STEP 12: Install the battery

WARNING: Your heater contains a small battery. If swallowed, small batteries can cause a CHOKING HAZARD. Seek immediate medical attention if batteries are swallowed or inhaled. Keep children away from the small battery.

You need:

• Unscrew the switch button, insert the AAA battery (QQ) into the battery compartment, screw the switch button back in.

• Secure the base to the ground with three nails (RR).

• To improve stability, fill the bucket with sand, soil, or water.

STEP 13: Test for gas leaks

WARNING:

• Perform all leak tests outdoors.
• Extinguish all open flames.
• NEVER leak test when smoking.
• Do not use your heater until all connections have been leak tested and do not leak.

• Use a leak detection solution. OR Make a two to three ounce leak detection solution (one part liquid dish washing detergent and three parts water).
• Make sure that all patio heater and light valves are OFF.
• Apply several drops of the solution where the hose attaches to the regulator.

• Apply several drops of the solution where the regulator connects to the cylinder.

• Turn the cylinder valve ON.
• If bubbles occur, turn the cylinder valve OFF, then:
• If the leak is at the hose/regulator connection, tighten the connection and perform another leak test. If you continue to see bubbles, contact Customer Care for a replacement hose
• If the leak is at the regulator/cylinder valve connection, disconnect, reconnect, and perform another leak check. If you continue to see bubbles after several attempts, the cylinder valve is defective and should be returned to the cylinder’s place of purchase.

WARNING: Whenever gas connections are loosened or removed, you must perform a complete leak test.

Before you begin using your heater

WARNING: CARBON MONOXIDE HAZARD

For outdoor use only. Never use inside a house, or other unventilated or enclosed areas. Your heater consumes air (oxygen). Do not use in unventilated or enclosed areas to avoid endangering your life.

CAUTION:
Do not attempt to operate until you have read and understand all IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS in this manual and all assembly is complete and leak checks have been performed. This appliance shall be used only in a well-ventilated space and shall not be used in a building, garage, or any other enclosed area. An appliance may be installed with shelter no more inclusive than:

• With walls on all sides, but with no overhead cover.
• Within a partial enclosure which includes an overhead cover and no more than two side walls. These side walls may be parallel, as in a breezeway, or at right angles to each other.
• Within a partial enclosure which includes an overhead cover and three side walls, as long as 30% or more of the horizontal periphery of the enclosure is permanently open.

Note:

• Your heater operates at reduced efficiency below 40°F (4.4°C).
• Installation and repair should be done by a qualified service person.

Using checklist

• Before you use your heater, make sure that:
• You are familiar with this entire User’s Guide and understand all the precautions noted.
• All components are correctly assembled, intact, and operable.
• No alterations have been made.
• All gas connections are secure and do not leak.
• Wind velocity is below 10 mph (16 kph).
• Your heater is outdoors (outside any enclosure).
• There is adequate fresh air ventilation.
• Your heater is away from gasoline or other flammable liquids or vapors.
• Your heater is away from windows, air intake openings, sprinklers, and other water sources.
• The top and sides of your heater are at least three ft. (one m) away from combustible materials.
• Your heater is on a hard and level surface.
• There are no signs of spider or insect nests on or in your heater.
• All burner passages are clear.
• All air circulation passages are clear.
• Children and adults have been alerted to the hazards of high surface temperatures and should stay away to avoid burns or clothing ignition.
• Young children are carefully supervised when they are in the area of your heater.
• Clothing or other protective material is not hung from your heater, or placed on or near your heater.
• Any guard or other protective device removed while servicing your heater has been replaced prior to operating your heater.
• You inspect your heater before use and have a qualified service person inspect it at least annually.
• The control compartment, burner, and circulating air passageways of your heater are clean.

Before turning on the gas

• Make sure that the surrounding areas are free of combustible materials, gasoline, and other flammable vapors or liquids.
• Make sure that there is no obstruction to air ventilation.
• Make sure that all gas connections are tight and there are no leaks.
• Make sure that the cylinder cover is clear of debris.
• Make sure that any component removed during assembly or servicing is replaced and fastened prior to starting.

Before lighting your heater

• Inspect your heater before each use and have a qualified service person inspect it at least annually.
• If you are relighting a hot heater, always wait at least five minutes.
• Inspect the visible portion of the hose before each use. If the hose leaks, you must replace it prior to operation. Only use the replacement hose assembly specified by the manufacturer.
• You must use the pressure regulator and hose assembly supplied with your heater. Only use replacement pressure regulators and hose assemblies specified by the manufacturer.

Lighting your heater

WARNING: Be careful when attempting to manually ignite your heater. Holding in the control knob for more than 10 seconds before igniting the gas will cause a ball of flame upon ignition.

Note: When the burner is on the emitter screen becomes bright red due to intense heat. The color is more visible at night. The burner displays tongues of blue and yellow flame. Yellow flames or thick black smoke indicate an obstruction of the airflow through the burners. The flame should be blue with straight yellow tops.

• Turn on the valve on the gas cylinder.
• Push in and turn the control knob to the HIGH (maximum) position (counter-clockwise 90º).

• Holding down the control knob, press the igniter button several times until the main flame is ignited. Release the control knob 10 seconds after ignition.
• Turn the control knob to LOW (minimum) and leave it there for five minutes or more before turning the knob to the temperature setting you want.

• If the burner flame goes out, turn off your heater. Wait at least five minutes or more to let the gas dissipate, then repeat steps 2 to 4.

WARNING: Incorrect operation can cause injury or property damage. If the burner fails to remain lit, close all of the valves and wait at least five minutes before attempting to relight the burner.

WARNING: Avoid inhaling fumes emitted from your heater’s first use. Smoke and odor from the burning of oils used in manufacturing will appear. Both the smoke and odor dissipates after approximately 30 minutes. Your heater should NOT produce thick black smoke.

Note: The burner may be noisy when initially turned on.

Adjusting the flame

• Turn the control knob counter-clockwise to increase the flame or clockwise to decrease the flame

Turning your heater off

• Turn the cylinder valve clockwise to OFF and disconnect the regulator.

WARNING: Your heater will be hot after use. Handle with extreme care.

Note: After use, some discoloration of the emitter screen is normal.

Shutting down checklist

• After you turn off your heater, make sure that:
• The gas control is in the OFF position.
• The propane cylinder valve is OFF.
• During periods of extended inactivity or when transporting, disconnect the gas line.

Maintaining your heater

CAUTION:

• Do NOT touch or move your heater for at least 45 minutes after use.
• The reflector is hot to the touch. Let the reflector cool before touching.

Checking the gas hose

Inspect the gas hose once a month to check for cracks or signs of deterioration caused by exposure to outside temperature extremes and flexing. Replace the hose with a new PVC hose if there are any cracks or leaks in the hose.

Cleaning your heater

• To enjoy years of outstanding performance from your heater, make sure that you perform the following maintenance activities on a regular basis:
• Keep the exterior surfaces clean.
• Use warm soapy water for cleaning. Never use flammable or corrosive cleaning agents.
• While cleaning your heater, make sure that you keep the area around the burner assembly dry at all times. Do not submerge the control valve assembly. If the gas control is submerged in water, do NOT use it. It must be replaced.
• Keep the area around your heater clear and free from combustible materials, gasoline, and other flammable vapors and liquids.
• Do not obstruct the flow of combustion and ventilation air.
• Keep the ventilation opening(s) on the cylinder enclosure free and clear from debris.
• Air flow must be unobstructed. Keep controls, burner, and circulating air passageways clean.

Note: Use high-quality automobile wax to help maintain the appearance of your heater. Apply to exterior surfaces from the pole down. Do not apply to the emitter screen or domes.

Checking for leaks and blockages

Check the visible portions of the hose assembly located within the confines of the heater post. Inspect the entire hose assembly at least annually, disassembling the reflector and burner. Inspect the hose assembly for evidence of excessive abrasion, cuts, or wear. Suspected areas should be leak tested. Re-assemble the reflector and burner after checking for leaks.

Signs of blockages

• Your heater does NOT reach the temperature you want.
• The heater glow is excessively uneven.
• Your heater makes popping noises.
• Spiders and insects can nest in the burner or orifices. This dangerous condition can damage your heater and render it unsafe for use. Clean the burner holes by using a heavy-duty pipe cleaner. Compressed air may help clear away smaller particles.
• Carbon deposits may create a fire hazard. Clean the dome and burner screen with warm soapy water if any carbon deposits develop.

Note: In a salt-air environment (such as near an ocean), corrosion occurs more quickly than normal. Frequently check for corroded areas and repair them promptly.

Storing your heater

Storing between uses

• Turn the control knob OFF.
• Disconnect the propane source.
• Store your heater upright in an area sheltered from direct contact with inclement weather (such as rain, sleet, hail, snow, dust, and debris).
• Secure your heater to a stationary surface, (such as a pole) to help keep the wind from blowing it over.
• You can cover your heater to protect exterior surfaces and to help prevent build-up in air passages.

Note: Wait until your heater is cool before covering it.

Storing long term or transporting

• During periods of extended inactivity or when transporting:
• Turn the control knob OFF.
• Disconnect the propane source and move it to a secure, well-ventilated location outdoors.
• Store your heater upright in an area sheltered from direct contact with inclement weather (such as rain, sleet, hail, snow, dust, wind, and debris).
• You can cover your heater to protect exterior surfaces and to help prevent build-up in air passages.
• Never leave the propane cylinder exposed to direct sunlight or excessive heat.

Note: Wait until your heater is cool before covering it.

Servicing

Only a qualified service person should repair gas passages and associated components.
